Western society promotes pleasant fragrances. Cleaning products, soaps, perfumes, deodorants, and the like are formulated to evoke positive thoughts and feelings. In contrast, unpleasant odors are distressing. Consciously or unconsciously, unpleasant odors cause avoidance, a primordial, protective reaction to potentially dangerous substances. Unfortunately, wounds often have an unpleasant odor.
